Summer in Times Square: NYC’s Unusual Tranquility

In the summer of 2009, Times Square became the canvas for an experiment that transformed it from a bustling crossroads into a momentarily tranquil haven. The city placed lawn chairs on the asphalt, inviting anyone to sit and take a breather. This was a rare sight for a place that epitomizes the never-ending hustle of New York City. People lounged, temporarily slowing the pace of life in one of the fastest-moving spots on the planet.

This scene caught my eye for its sheer unexpectedness. Here was Times Square, known worldwide for its bright lights and constant motion, hosting a moment of calm and community. It was a striking juxtaposition: the familiar backdrop of towering buildings and the simple, relatable act of pausing and watching the world go by.

I captured this moment, this slice of city life, and later, during a workshop with New York’s famous photographer Jay Maisel, I had the opportunity to share it. Jay’s workshops are legendary, where photographers gather to refine their vision and technique under the guidance of a master.  Even New York’s comic legend Micheal Richards attended his workshop that week.  When this image came up, Jay paused. He noted its uniqueness, its ability to capture a moment of serenity amidst the urban chaos. Coming from someone who has documented New York City with his lens like no other, his words resonated deeply. It wasn’t just an acknowledgment of the image’s composition or technical aspects but of its ability to convey a story, a fleeting instance of Manhattan’s capacity for surprise and transformation.

The architecture surrounding this serene scene—the mix of old and new, the grandeur and the grit—adds another layer to its story. These buildings have witnessed countless such transformations, embodying the city’s perpetual motion and moments of unexpected stillness.

Looking back, the photograph from that summer day in Times Square reminds us of New York’s endless contrasts. It captures a brief period when the city offered its inhabitants a chance to pause, a snapshot of a metropolis that is always changing yet somehow remains the same.
