Forbidden Palace Moat: A Moment Frozen in Time – Fine Art Print by Dan Kosmayer
As the artist behind the lens, I bring you a piece of history in the heart of Beijing, China – a fine-art photographic print of the Forbidden Palace Moat. It’s a sight to relish, where the ancient meets the modern. The Moat, known as Tongzi He, or the Pipe River, once served as the last bastion of defense for Chinese emperors since the reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). This grand Moat encircles the Forbidden City, an area abundant with trees on one side and residential homes on the other. The image captured portrays the ancient aura of the outer wall of the Forbidden Palace moat, with the tranquil waters reflecting the verdant trees and the old residential buildings.
The 3,300-meter-long Moat, which widens to fifty-two meters at its broadest point, still carries the echoes of the past. The Tongzi River, as it’s known today, has been called many names – Jinshui (Gold Water River), Yu (Jade River), or Yu He (Imperial River). But to the nearby residents, it’s the Pipe River, a nod to the days when it supplied fresh, clean water to the palace. As it mirrors the trees and houses of the city, it also reflects the tales of the bygone eras.
