Province House Building Halifax, Nova Scotia
The Province House, which opened in 1819, is Canada’s oldest legislative building and home to the country’s first elected House of Assembly. Province House, located in downtown Halifax, was built on the original site of the colony of Nova Scotia’s first governor’s residence in Halifax. It is Canada’s oldest legislative building and has been described as the country’s finest example of Palladian architecture by some.
Palladian architecture is known for its symmetrical stateliness, classical elements, and grand appearance. Corinthian columns, for example, are frequently seen supporting open structures or porticos. This style emphasizes symmetry, with each half of a building mirroring the other.
